Hello,
My name’s Will.
I’m the founder of Tape Club Records, which for some reason you must have encountered
at some point in your life.
I started the label because I wanted to be part of a community who are excited by
independent music.
Part of that excitement for me - as a music fan - comes from feeling a connection to
the artists and people involved in the records I listen to.
I’d like to better the connection between us.
If you’ll let me, I’d like to tell you about what it’s like to be involved in a label
and community like ours. Perhaps you’ll write back with questions along the way? I’ll
try to write once a month.
Let me begin with a summary of my thoughts about where we’re currently at: almost a
decade in, we’re still figuring out how it works. It’s a modest operation - just myself
and Hinako ‘run’ the label, and we both have full time jobs as well as other musical
and personal endeavours. Neither one of us gets paid, and the label just about runs at
a breakeven point with new and existing releases - along the way I’ve managed to secure
advances/investment from various parties, but ironically they’ve not contributed
directly to what helps us tick over. We have a few releases which, despite having not
had much success at press/radio, have connected well with listeners on the internet
- subsequently they’ve crossed a ‘magic line’ and generate a steady amount of streams.
Streaming income isn’t that bad and if you cross said line; you can be looking at up to
GBP100 per 50,000 streams across the different platforms. I can’t explain why some of
these tracks connect - they just do, and people share them. Lots.
In the past we’ve spent anything between GBP350 and 10,000 on the marketing/promo. of
our releases and, from what we’ve experienced, it hasn’t made any explicit difference,
so far. Thing is, you can have a release that’s had very little press/radio attention,
but resonates well with a particular music supervisor (the person who selects and
licenses the music for adverts, films and TV programmes) and all of a sudden a small
licensing request comes in, and dwarfs the income that a record that you’ve spend much
more money on has made. That record might have had 5 plays on BBC Radio 1, 5 on 6Music,
10 features/reviews on ‘big' websites/blogs/magazines, but only actually have been
exposed to a relatively small amount of people and thus only sold 1-100 copies, and
generated a small amount of streamed income. A small license could generate GBP1-5000,
which, for a record that doesn’t cross that line, as mentioned above and likely to be
an avant-garde electronic/vocal record with obtuse artwork, would require LOTS of
things to go right. This is what Warp, Domino, 4AD etc are good at - they’ll typically
see that an album is reviewed in the majority of the print outlets, that the artist
receives a handful of good quality blog features, that the record is played in healthy
amounts on 6Music or Radio 1 if they’re lucky, and then to help it get amount of
visibility at stores across the world. This, combined with the likelyhood that they’ve
got an active sync department pushing for the material to get licensed, the fact that
the artist has attracted the attention of an established booking agent who can pull in
good live/tour opportunities, and the reputation of the label itself who has a fanbase
willing to listen to most of the new signings, gives things a good chance. That being
said, it can also go wrong there - money can be spent on signing and promoting a new
release that for some reason or another doesn’t hit register with the community. And
thus, I’m starting to learn our place as a label in all this - because there IS a
certain amount of luck involved, we have to operate in a way that sees one or two
releases amongst many ‘carrying’ the others. In our case, we’re tiny in comparison to
Warp, Domino and 4AD, and so the idea to do a few releases per year, with much lower,
and ideally more consistent, budgets, hoping to generate one or two wins per decade
makes sense. Following that logic, I think it’s fair to think that we’re doing okay.
Things just about keep themselves going, and if we keep re-investing what we make, from
our other new releases, one or two will connect well over the next few years, and keep
us going even further.
Now, for those of you less interested in the detail, this might all be a little
business-heavy, but there was a reason behind this discussion - I’m keen for more
people to understand that, when you see an artist at a * seemingly sold out show at
a reputable London venue (* there’s typically a lot of friends, family, label and
industry present), who’ve been played on the radio and their records reviewed in
magazines, you must disregard the temptation to think ‘they’ve made it’. In very few
cases are any of those artists destined to do more than take part in music as a part
-subsidised pasttime, alongside another profession. Records that are seemingly doing
pretty well by your standards don’t translate into any meaningful income, ones that
look to be doing great are probably only just breaking even, either at a lower level of
investment (where they’ve been lucky to connect with a wide audience online) or at a
higher level of investment (where they’re all over blogs, magazines, radio, but not
racking up the stream figures), and records that are absolutely killing it - the top
tier of indie music, registering in the charts globally - is where you get to start
thinking that they’ve actually made it, alongside the 20,000+ others watching with you
on their arena tour. There is one tiny and brilliant loophole, which is where an artist
finds ‘secret success’ - this is something I don’t ever aim for, but would LOVE for all
of our artists to achieve - and it can come about in two ways: 1) via the licensing
route above, where instead of a small license, an independent artist gets a BIG license
- we’re talking a major international TV advert, the trailer for a mainstream movie, or
the theme tune for a successful series, 2) writing a hit for someone else or someone
BIG covering your track. In a nutshell, I’d confess that this is what gives me the buzz
to keep going - releasing consecutive weird records, one after the other, although
fulfilling from a taste point-of-view, can suffer from a lack of reward sometimes (not
financial, more from not as many people as you’d hoped hearing/listening to it), and so
it’s this little loophole can all of a sudden sky-rocket a piece of music from
obscurity to the financial levels that many people actually expect it’s already at,
that tickles my fancy.
It’s that and of course the excitement of making records for the sake of making
records, without any specific commercial targets or restraint. Tape Club has over the
years developed into a widely-networked group of creative individuals. This means that,
despite not being able to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on making records,
which no one does anyway, anymore, we can a) still involve some very talented people at
some amazing recording spaces and b ) derive a sense of achievement and satisfaction
from just releasing it amongst our own community, irrespective of a wider commercial
audience. A lot of the value that the label’s built up is (clearly) not related to it’s
financial capabilities, but as a unique platform for our particular community to engage
in the art of making records. This is why I started it, and now we’ve racked up 10
years’ worth of tales, which over coming months I’ll begin to share with you.
